Welcome to our new Creative Writing Group called Handsworth Inspired.
This is a writing group for women and is being supported by the writer, Myra Connell. The first group meeting will be taking place on Monday 10th January 2011 from 10am to 12pm and we hope to get your creative juices flowing. We are meeting at Women’s Help Centre, 321 Rookery Road, B21 9PR, so come in from the cold and have a cup of tea or coffee.
Sessions will be taking place every Monday until the end of March 2011 and will be fun and informative. This is not a training course but can hopefully give you practical ideas to direct your inner monologue into a strong voice to share with us all.
We want to hold a mirror up to reflect the amazing diversity of Handsworth. Therefore we are planning to publish our writing in a booklet which can include stories and poems in English written by the group. We value the importance of hearing the voices from Handsworth that get hidden therefore we will also be encouraging women from all races, religions, nationalities and ethnic origins to take part. We will be including the stories written by the women in their ‘mother tongue’ and translated into English. Stories and poems included can be submitted anonymously.

We’re not expecting Shakespeare to come and join us. You and your ideas, personal experience, family history, short stories, poems, song lyrics, oral history, however big or small are all welcome. So if your New Year’s resolution has been to try something new, come and join us. Who knows it might be the start of something big…..
